Teacher arrested for rumour-mongering about coronavirus in Odisha

The novel coronavirus, which has been declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), has gripped people across the world and has created a situation of panic. While people are preferring to stay at their houses and are avoiding public gatherings in an order to ensure their safety, the authorities have announced to take stern action against those who indulge in rumour-mongering. Meanwhile, a school teacher has been arrested by the police in Odisha’s Kalahandi district for posting rumors on social media about the coronavirus in a village.

The teacher posted a false message

The accused, who has been identified as Bindu Mahananda, was a resident of Dudkel village in Golamunda Block. Allegedly, he had posted that a youth, living in Golamunda Block’s Khalikani village has been diagnosed with coronavirus. Further, the accused teacher wrote that the infected youth, who had recently returned from Bengaluru, has isolated himself. The police officials were investigating the matter, he wrote in the fake message.

Pressed the panic button

As soon as the post surfaced on social media, the matter was reported immediately to the police. Likewise, the officials conducted an investigation and found that the school teacher was spreading rumors about the coronavirus and arrested him.
