Punjab honour killing: Man hacked to death by brothers-in-law in Tarn Taran, attacked 83 times in 40 seconds
PTC News Desk: A man was hacked to death by his two brothers-in-law in Tarn Taran in alleged case of honour killing. The two attackers reportedly stopped him outside a bus stand and stabbed him 83 times in 37 seconds, leaving him in a pool of blood.
After the attack, passersby caught one of the accused, while the other escaped. A 37-second video of the stabbing has surfaced. Police have registered a murder case and started an investigation. The victim’s wife has also been taken into custody.
According to information available, Jagjit Singh, a resident of Kadhgil village, worked as a DJ. He was staying at his maternal relatives’ village, Naorangabad, where he fell in love with Jashanpreet Kaur. About a month ago, the couple reportedly got married against their families’ wishes. Both families were said to be against to the relationship.
Wife brought to village a week ago
According to the family, the matter was taken up before a village panchayat, after which Jagjit’s family agreed to send Jashanpreet back to her parents. However, her brothers were reportedly unhappy with the relationship.
About a week ago, Jagjit brought his wife to Kadhgil village at the request of his father-in-law.
On Sunday morning, Jagjit’s mother-in-law, Kulwinder Kaur, called him to the bus stand to talk. He left on his motorcycle, carrying a cold drink and samosas for her.
Police allege that outside the bus stand, Jashanpreet’s brothers Jaspreet Singh and Harpreet Singh stopped him. As soon as he parked his motorcycle, the two allegedly attacked him with knives.
According to the allegations, Jaspreet stabbed him 36 times and Harpreet 47 times. After the attack, passersby caught Jaspreet, while Harpreet managed to escape.
Uncle alleges victim had received threats
Jagjit’s maternal uncle, Jaj Singh, alleged that Jagjit had been receiving threats before the murder. He also demanded an investigation into the possible role of Jagjit’s father-in-law Balwant Singh, mother-in-law Kulwinder Kaur and other relatives.
Police have also detained Jashanpreet Kaur and are examining her mobile phone as part of the investigation.
Mother says she had been having frightening dreams
Jagjit’s mother, Lovepreet Kaur, arrived after hearing about her son’s death and broke down in tears. She said she had been having frightening dreams for some time and feared that something bad would happen.
She alleged that Jashanpreet had trapped her son and got him killed through her brothers.
Police are conducting raids to locate the absconding accused.
