Viral video shows AAP MLA Dev Mann allegedly kicking, slapping youth in Punjab's Nabha, sparks outrage
PTC News Desk: A political controversy has erupted after a video showing Nabha Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurdev Singh ‘Dev Mann’ allegedly slapping and kicking a young man went viral on social media. The incident reportedly took place on October 18.
In the video, a young man wearing a black shirt and a cap parks his motorcycle on a street and approaches a policeman standing with Dev Mann. The MLA is then seen kicking and slapping the youth. The policeman also takes hold of the young man and leads him away. The commotion draws several residents out of their homes.
After the video surfaced, opposition leaders shared it on social media and questioned the conduct of the MLA and the government.
Dev Mann Gives His Version
As the controversy grew, Dev Mann said the incident was being presented without its full context.
The MLA claimed that he was travelling on the road when a young man riding a motorcycle without a number plate came close to his vehicle and narrowly avoided a collision.
He said he stopped to check what had happened, but the youth allegedly tried to escape. According to Dev Mann, the police were also chasing the young man, who was eventually caught after being surrounded.
Dev Mann said he was not responsible for deciding whether anyone was guilty and that the matter should be handled according to the law. He added that if someone was riding a vehicle without a number plate and tried to flee when the police asked them to stop, he believed it was his responsibility to help the police catch them.
Opposition targets AAP MLA
Congress leaders Vijay Inder Singla and Sukhpal Singh Khaira, along with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, shared the video and raised questions about the incident.
The opposition leaders questioned the MLA’s conduct after the footage circulated online.
Dev Mann also appealed to residents of the Nabha constituency to inform the police and administration if they had information about people selling drugs in their areas. He said public cooperation was important in the fight against drugs and stressed that drug dealers should face action according to the law.
