Cyclone Asani: Heavy rain, gusting winds to affect Andaman and Nicobar Islands, alert issued
As Andaman and Nicobar Islands gear up for this year’s first cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a cyclone watch.
On Sunday, a low-pressure system brewing in the South East Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Andaman Sea became a depression and on March 21, it is predicted to become a cyclonic storm called ‘Asani.’
In the Bay of Bengal, an alert has been issued ahead of the expected intensification of cyclone Asani, as well as related rainfall and gale winds, during the next 36 hours. The storm is most likely to pass across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, posing little direct threat to India’s mainland.
The administration of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is making arrangements, and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has swung into action with pre-emptive measures to deal with the effects of Cyclone Asani when it makes landfall.

Officials further stated that rain and high winds induced by Cyclone Asani disrupted normal living in parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday.
On March 20, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall/thundershower in most parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with heavy to very heavy and isolated extremely heavy rainfall in a few spots.
Meanwhile, the weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into South East Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and along and off Andaman and Nicobar between March 19 and 21. The IMD further asked fishermen to stay off East Central Bay of Bengal on March 21 and 22 and into North East Bay of Bengal on March 22.
