Delhi shocker: Female doctor thrashed, hair pulled after newborn's death at hospital
PTC News Desk: In a shocking turn of events, a woman resident doctor was subjected to physical assault at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital in Delhi's Rohini by five woman attendants of patient following death of a critically ill newborn child. The incident which occurred on June 9 inside the hospital premises has sparked massive outrage across the medical fraternity.
According to the Delhi police, the attack took place when the doctor from the obstetrics and gynaecology department was walking from the OPD to Ward No. 12 to resume her duties. The accused women, attendants of a patient named Sonia admitted to Ward No. 11, allegedly intercepted the doctor in a corridor and physically assaulted her.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Amit Goel, the critically ill infant was delievered a week ago and was on life support. Despite appropriate medical assistance, the new born succumbed while the mother is still undergoing treatment.
"The doctor was suddenly intercepted and physically assaulted by four to five women who were attendants of a patient named Sonia, who was admitted to Ward No. 11 for delivery," Goel said.
As eyewitnesses recound the incident, they claimed that the patient's women attendants thrashed the doctor, pulled her hair and tried to tear her clothes and allegedly attempted to strangle her with a stethoscope. The doctor sustained multiple injuries and was later treated at the hospital.
An FIR has been registered in the case. However, all the accused were granted bail shortly after their arrest, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from the medical fraternity.
The Delhi Medical Association has declared June 11 as 'Black Day' and urged the doctors on duty to wear a black band to express solidarity with assaulted doctor. "All the doctors in different hospitals will wear a black ribbon on their arms during their shifts. An FIR was lodged by the hospital administration but all the accused got bail immediately. Today an IMA delegation will meet the victim doctors and will decide on the next course of action," a DMA official said.
Following the incident, the Indian Medical Association is also expected to weigh in as a delegation is scheduled to meet the assaulted doctor today to decide the possible future course of action.
