Kathmandu bans all Indian films, questions Sita's depiction in 'Adipurush'
Mumbai (Maharashtra), June 18: Despite its record-breaking earnings, Adipurush is facing a significant backlash in India and now the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, has officially banned the release of Indian films. Kathmandu issued an all-out on Indian films after the mayor raised concerns over the depiction of Sita in the film Adipurush.
According to sources, Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has declared a ban on all Indian films in the Kathmandu Metropolitan Area, and he has reportedly deployed police to ensure that no Indian films be screened in the metropolitan area's theatres.
Balen Shah has already expressed concerns over Sita's depiction in the Adipurush. Balen Shah objected to Sita being referred to as the "daughter of India" when she was actually the "daughter of Nepal." Adipurush's makers allegedly made changes to the film to address the demands of Nepal politicians.
“If the movie is allowed to be telecast in other areas and abroad by prohibiting the performance of anti-national films within the Kathmandu Metropolitan area, then it is prohibited to perform any Indian movie in Kathmandu metropolitan from tomorrow until objectionable portions are removed from the movie," Balen Shah stated.
Previously, the Nepal censor board certified Adipurush after the T-series removed the controversial Sita dialogue, but the film's release in Nepal was halted.
Indian audience has been criticizing the film for its poor VFX, offensive dialogues, and below-average performances from the actors. The issue is also gathering political traction, with the Congress and other opposition parties criticising the BJP and other right-wing organisations for their silence on the film.
The film is doing great business in India and is anticipated to earn over Rs 100 crore during the first weekend itself. The film has grossed more than Rs. 200 crore worldwide.
