Freaky Dust storm: Trees uprooted, power cuts and 1 dead in Chandigarh
Bringing respite from heat, winds accompanied by rain brought the mercury down by eight notches on Friday evening in Tricity and some parts of Punjab.
One man was killed while another was injured as high-speed winds hit the city around 5 pm. The sky turned dark as dust storm engulfed the city. Winds peaking at 90 km/hr were recorded at the old airport observatory.
The winds led to power cuts, uprooting of trees, waterlogging and traffic jams in many parts of tricity and some parts of Punjab too.
A man died after a tree came crashing down on him on the Sector 10/11 road.
UT senior superintendent of police (SSP, traffic) took to Twitter to share an advisory: “Due to sudden rain and peak hours there is a general traffic congestion in Chandigarh. @trafficchd (Chandigarh traffic police) is on the job. Please remain patient.”
Meanwhile, in Mohali’s Balongi village a shopkeeper was injured after a mobile tower collapsed.
Trees were uprooted from Sectors 10, 11, 16, 17, 22, 23, 35, 36,37 and Manimajra. Police said they received 22 calls regarding uprooting of trees in Chandigarh.
In Sector 11, Panchkula the road got blocked after a signboard fell on it.
