Panaji (Goa), March 12: After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the popular mandate in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday tendered his resignation to Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai at Raj Bhawan in Panaji, paving the door for the formation of a new government. After resigning as CM, Sawant stated that "The procedure to form the new government has begun. The House would be dissolved on Monday. The Central observer will arrive in Goa to decide the date of the swearing-in ceremony of the new government." Sawant has now been asked to serve as the caretaker Chief Minister for Goa. Pramod Sawant resigns as Goa CM "Met Governor Shri @psspillaigov Ji at Raj Bhavan today to hand over my resignation letter. The Governor has appointed me as the caretaker CM until the further process," the BJP leader tweeted on Saturday. The Chief Minister emphasised that Goa will continue to prosper under double engine government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dynamic leadership. Goa will continue to prosper with the 'Double Engine Sarkar' under the dynamic leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi ji," he added. With the support of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak (MGP) and independent candidates, the BJP, which fell one seat short of a majority in Goa, is set to retain power in the state. Pramod Sawant resigns as Goa CM With 20 seats in the 40-member state Assembly, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in Goa, putting the Congress in a distant second place with 11 seats. Independent candidates won three seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak each won two (MGP). The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) each won one seat. According to the Election Commission, the BJP obtained 33.31 percent of the vote, followed by the Congress (23.46%), MGP (7.60%), AAP (6.77%), and Trinamool Congress (5.21 percent).
