Gujarat: 12 die as wall collapses at salt factory; PM Modi expresses grief
Gujarat, May 18: At least 12 workers were killed on Wednesday when a wall of a salt factory of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in Morbi's Halvad collapsed. Many more workers are likely to be trapped under the debris of the wall, according to media reports.
“12 people have died after an incident happened at Sagar Salt Factory in Halvad GIDC. Government stands with the families of the deceased,” State Minister Brijesh Merja said.
He further informed that 90 percent of the rescue operation has been completed. The reason behind the wall collapse is not ascertained yet. "It is a matter of investigation, which will be done by the police," he added.
The Gujarat government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident that claimed the lives of 12 workers. He also added that authorities are providing all possible help to the injured.

“The tragedy in Morbi caused by a wall collapse is heart-rending. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Local authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected,” tweeted PM Modi.
The Prime Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF to the next of kin.
According to the District Collector, the incident took place when the process of filling salt in sacks was going on. The wall suddenly collapsed, burying 20 to 30 labourers. At least 12 deaths have been confirmed.
