FSSAI bars Dabur from selling honey, ghee with '100 per cent' claims
PTC News Desk: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has stopped Dabur India from selling several food products with "100 per cent" claims, saying such labels can mislead consumers because they are unclear and cannot be verified.
In an order issued on Monday, FSSAI said products such as honey, apple cider vinegar, virgin coconut oil, sesame oil, cow ghee, coconut water and coconut milk were being sold with claims like "100 per cent Natural", "100 per cent Pure", "100 per cent Purity Guaranteed", "100 per cent Organic" and "100 per cent Tender Coconut Water".
The regulator said these claims violate the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising & Claims) Regulations, 2018.
What FSSAI found
FSSAI said Dabur Himalayan Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Dabur Organic Honey were displaying the Jaivik Bharat logo without a valid FSSAI organic certification.
It also objected to Dabur Hommade Coconut Milk being advertised with the claim "100 per cent Purity", saying such a claim is not allowed for compound food products under the 2018 rules.
The regulator added that it had earlier asked Dabur to remove the misleading "100 per cent" claims, but the company did not take satisfactory corrective action.
Dabur's response
Dabur said it has received the FSSAI notice and is reviewing the content mentioned by the regulator.
"We have received the FSSAI notice and are in the process of checking the content mentioned in the notice on our website," the company said.
The action is part of FSSAI's ongoing crackdown on misleading food claims. In recent months, the regulator has also taken action against several food businesses, e-commerce platforms, alcoholic beverage companies and energy drink manufacturers.
