Mahashivratri is considered especially auspicious, as it is supposed to be the night of convergence of Shiva and Shakti, which in essence means the male and feminine energies that keep the world in balance. Shiva and Shakti are revered as the embodiment of love, power, and oneness.

Every state in the nation, including Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, celebrates Maha Shivratri  in different ways.

Devotees consume satvik foods like ragi, sabudana, fruits, and some vegetables while keeping the fast.

Keep in mind Do’s and Don’ts while celebrating the occasion

Dos of fasting on Maha Shivratri:

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids to stay hydrated. Coconut water, buttermilk, and fruit juices are excellent choices.

Choose healthy food options: If you plan to have a meal before the fast, make sure it is light and healthy. Choose foods that are easy to digest, such as fruits, vegetables, and lentils.

Stick to a simple diet: During the fast, stick to a simple diet of fruits, milk, and light snacks like sabudana khichdi or roasted makhana.

Special food items: Milk, dhatura flowers, belpatra, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, honey, ghee, and sugar are among the offerings made to Lord Shiva, therefore devotees can also consume such items.

To get the full benefits of the Vrat, devotees break their fast between dawn and the end of Chaturdashi Tithi.

Don'ts of fasting on Maha Shivratri:

Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Stay away from tea, coffee, and other caffeinated beverages. Also, refrain from consuming alcohol.

Avoid pulses:  It's considered by many to refrain from consuming anything made of rice, wheat, or pulses, as these foods are not permitted during the fast.

Don't overeat after breaking the fast: When you break the fast, avoid overeating or consuming heavy foods. Start with something light like fruit juice or coconut water.

Avoid onion, garlic: People generally avoid garlic, onion, and non-vegetarian meals because they are tamsik in nature.

Happy Maha Shivratri!
