High Court seeks entire record of Chandigarh mayoral polls

Chandigarh, February 4: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the UT Administration and sought the entire record of Chandigarh mayoral polls polls, including ballot slips and videography, in a sealed cover. The case will be listed within two weeks. Notably, Aam Aadmi Party's mayoral candidate Anju Katyal and two others had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the results. The AAP could not have its Mayor despite getting the highest seat share (14) in the General House of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. With 14 votes each in the House, both AAP and BJP seemed set for a tie, but the episode took a twist towards the end. One AAP vote was declared invalid as there was a tick mark on the other side of the ballot paper. The AAP cried foul and alleged that the BJP forced officials to declaring a vote invalid. The matter has now reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In the December 24 election, the AAP bagged 14 seats, BJP 12 seats, Congress eight and the SAD one seat. The number of BJP votes in the House went up to 14 as Harpreet Kaur Babla, wife of former Chandigarh Congress vice-president, Devinder Babla, also joined the BJP. Another vote it had was of Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher. Soon after the declaration of the result, AAP councillors resorted to sloganeering.
