Manipur elections 2022: EC orders repoll in 12 polling stations after violence continues

Kakching (Manipur), March 3: As violence continues in Kakching Khunou, the Election Commission on Thursday ordered re-polling at 12 polling stations in Churachandpur, Imphal East, and Kangpokpi districts, ahead of the second phase of the Manipur Assembly elections. The re-polling will take place on March 5 when 22 assembly constituencies will go to the polls in the second phase of elections. For the unversed, a clash broke out between Congress and BJP workers in Kakching Khunou. In the pre-poll violence that erupted in Kakching Khunou Ningthou Leikai, 12 vehicles including two-wheelers and four-wheelers were wrecked in the mob fury on Wednesday night around 11.30 pm. The incident took place when some BJP workers were passing to and fro near Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh's election camp blasting their election theme song on loudspeakers. This enraged Congress workers and exchange of hot words took place, following which workers of both political parties got engaged in a scuffle. Repolling in 12 polling stations in Manipur The second and final voting phase of the Manipur Assembly elections is set for March 5.  The first phase of the elections for 38 seats was held on February 28 in five electoral districts, Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur. According to the Election Commission, the first phase saw an 88.63 percent voter turnout. Manipur Elections 2022 Phase 1 Highlight: 78.03% voter turnout recorded till 5 pm Sarouthel, New Keithelmanbi, Songsang, Maite, Tinsuong, Majuron Kuki, N Chingphei, Khoirentak, Molsang, Leinom, Teikot and Maukot are among the polling stations that will go for repoll. The proposal for repolling in these polling stations was recommended based on the facts and information received and reported from Retumlng Officers and the main reason for consideration of re-polling was damage of EVMs by miscreants during and after the election.
