Met Gala 2022: Emma Chamberlain wears Patiala's Maharaja Bhupinder Singh's necklace; netizens react
Emma Chamberlain has been making headlines for wearing something with historical significance on Met Gala 2022 red carpet.
The famous American YouTuber's look for this year sparked controversy as she wore the choker that belonged to Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh with her Louis Vuitton dress and a tiara.
Emma walked the red carpet as the Brand Ambassador for Cartier. As she walked on the Met Gala 2022 red carpet wearing the antique piece of jewellery, netizens were quick to point out that the necklace belonged to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
The history behind Maharaja of Patiala's necklace
The Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh, in 1928, decided to turn the world's seventh-largest diamond, the De Beers diamond, into a necklace. He hired Cartier to make a necklace, however, it disappeared mysteriously after his son Maharaja Yadavindra Singh last wore it in 1948.

Known as the famous Patiala necklace, it reappeared in London and again disappeared for some time before being "buy-back" by Cartier. However, the claim that the necklace was "stolen" has not been proven.
The Patiala necklace was the most expensive piece of jewellery ever made in history, which would have cost more than 30 million dollars in its original form.

Many people criticised the famous YouTuber and called the piece of jewellery a' stolen choker' in the comments section of Emma Chamberlain’s Instagram photos.
Where a Twitter user commented, "So I just found out Emma Chamberlain wore the Maharaja of Patiala’s necklace at the met gala… this is wayyy worse than kim wearing marilyn monroe’s dress. It has a deep and painful history attached to it. Very on theme, nothing screams gilded glamour quite like expropriation"; another on Twitter said, "Thanks #cartier. Those are the jewels of the Maharaja of Patiala. That’s a piece of India’s stolen history, not a fancy piece of jewellery to lend out to celebrities. Disrespectful on so many levels."
