Air India pilot detained at Vancouver airport just before takeoff over alcohol smell

PTC News Desk: An Air India pilot was removed from duty just before departure in Vancouver on December 23 after Canadian authorities flagged concerns over a suspected smell, leading to additional checks. The incident caused a delay to flight AI186.

Reports said an airport staff member allegedly noticed the pilot sipping wine or purchasing alcohol and alerted authorities. A breathalyser test was then conducted, which the pilot reportedly failed, prompting officials to offload him from the flight for further questioning. Authorities cited safety concerns regarding his fitness to operate the aircraft.

Air India apologised to passengers for the delay and said it was cooperating fully with Canadian officials. The airline added that refreshments and assistance were provided to passengers and stressed that safety remained its top priority.

"Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations," said airlines spokesperson.
