Assam Police Implements Fitness Assessment: Cops given 3 months to shape up or opt for voluntary retirement
Guwahati, May 17: The Assam police have introduced a fitness survey for its personnel, and those found "unfit" will be given the option of voluntary retirement, according to GP Singh, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam.
This decision aligns with the directions given by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio. Singh emphasized that the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all police personnel, including officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS), will be professionally recorded.
"We plan to give three months' time to all Assam police personnel, including IPS and Assam Police Service (APS) officers, until August 15, and then start BMI assessment in the next 15 days," Singh announced on Twitter.

He further explained, "All those who fall into the obese category (BMI 30 ) will be offered another three months to reduce weight (until the end of November), and after that, they will have the option of the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS), except for those with genuine medical conditions like thyroidism, etc."
Singh himself committed to being the first to undergo BMI recording on August 16.
On April 30, the Chief Minister announced that police personnel who are habitual drinkers, obese, or facing corruption charges would be given the choice of VRS or the Compulsory Retirement Scheme (CRS).
"We have around 300 officers and jawans in the state police who are habitual drinkers, and excessive alcohol consumption has adversely affected their health. We have provision for VRS for them," Sarma had stated.
Prior to this announcement, in a meeting with senior police officers, the Chief Minister instructed them to "remove deadwood from the force" in order to transform the state police into a more physically fit and efficient organization.
