PTC Web Desk: A passenger has been arrested for allegedly attempting to open the emergency exit of a Batik Air flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi, prompting swift intervention by the cabin crew and fellow passengers. The incident occurred while the aircraft was in the air. The police have registered a case against the accused.

Incident took place during flight

According to the FIR, the incident occurred aboard Batik Air flight OD231 between 9:30 pm and 11:05 pm on Wednesday while the aircraft was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi. Airport officials identified the accused as Jamsheer Athanikkal, an Indian national from Kootannad in Kerala's Palakkad district.

The police said the accused allegedly attempted to force open the aircraft's emergency exit and damaged the panel covering the exit window.

Cabin crew members, assisted by fellow passengers, quickly intervened and prevented him from opening the emergency door. Videos of the incident surfaced on social media after the flight landed in Kochi on Thursday, showing passengers helping the crew restrain the man.

Police register case

According to the FIR, the accused also allegedly threatened fellow passengers, creating panic and putting the safety of everyone on board at risk. The complaint was filed by Batik Air's Security In-Charge after the aircraft landed at Kochi International Airport.

Following disembarkation, personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took the passenger into custody and handed him over to the Nedumbassery Police Station for further investigation.

The police have booked the accused under multiple legal provisions and further investigation is underway.
