PTC News Desk: A 29-year-old software engineer was killed and his friend injured in a violent hit-and-run incident in Bengaluru, reportedly sparked by an argument over a cigarette.

The incident took place in the early hours of May 10, when the victim, Sanjay, and his friend Chetan — both software engineers — stepped out around 4 a.m. for a tea break during their work-from-home night shift. While they were at a roadside stall, a man accompanied by his wife arrived in a Hyundai Creta and asked them for a cigarette. When the two declined and suggested he purchase his own, a heated confrontation broke out. Nearby onlookers intervened and were able to defuse the situation.

As Sanjay and Chetan rode away on their motorcycle, the accused, identified as Prateek, allegedly pursued them in his car and intentionally rammed into their bike as they were making a U-turn near Konanakunte Cross.

The collision hurled the motorcycle into the shutter of a nearby shop, leaving Sanjay critically injured and unconscious at the scene.

Both victims were immediately taken to the hospital. Sanjay died from his injuries two days later, while Chetan remains hospitalized with serious wounds.

The entire incident was caught on CCTV, leading police to classify the case as murder.
