PTC News Desk: Greater Noida police on Tuesday arrested builder Abhay Kumar in connection with the death of 27-year-old Yuvraj Mehta, who drowned after his SUV plunged into a pit dug for construction which was full of water.
Abhay Kumar is the owner of MZ Wishtown, a real estate project located in the Knowledge Park area. The arrest is a part of thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of software engineer.
The tragic incident unfolded on Friday night when Yuvraj's speeding Grand Vitara car plunged into a water-filled pit while he was returning to his home in Greater Noida's Sector 150 from his office in Gurugram. The engineer died due to drowning after authorities failed to launch timely rescue operation despite the presence of multiple teams.
Despite repeated cries for help, no one in the rescue team entered the drain to rescue the stranded engineer. His father, Rajkumar Mehta, also pointed out the inaction of the authorities.
As the water level rose, the car overturned and began to float. Yuvraj managed to get out of the vehicle and called his father, Rajkumar Mehta, to inform him about the accident. His father immediately alerted Dial-112 and rushed to the spot. Locals said the pit, excavated for the construction of a mall, has been left unattended for more than three years after the project was abandoned. Since then, rainwater and sewage from nearby housing societies have been collecting there.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, police on Sunday registered an FIR at Knowledge Park police station against MJ Wishtown Planner Limited and Lotus Green Construction Private Limited. The family has alleged that the developers failed to install basic safety measures such as barricades and reflectors, even though the stretch is accident-prone and residents had repeatedly raised concerns.
