CBSE makes CCTV cameras mandatory in classrooms, corridors, playgrounds
PTC Web Desk: In a major step towards enhancing student safety, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has amended its by-laws, making it mandatory for all affiliated schools to install high-resolution CCTV cameras with real-time audio-visual recording. The surveillance must cover all key areas, including entry and exit points, lobbies, classrooms, corridors, staircases, laboratories, library, canteen, storerooms, playgrounds, and other common spaces—excluding toilets and washrooms.
As per the updated CBSE guidelines, all schools must deploy surveillance systems at crucial points across the campus, including:
Entry and exit gates
School corridors and lobbies
Staircases and hallways
Classrooms and laboratories
Library and canteen areas
Store rooms and playgrounds
Other commonly accessed areas
Importantly, toilets and washrooms are excluded from this mandate to uphold students' privacy rights.
The CBSE emphasised that the CCTV cameras must support both audio and video recording for effective real-time monitoring. This initiative is aimed at reinforcing student and staff safety, improving institutional accountability, and preventing untoward incidents on school premises.
The CBSE has directed all affiliated schools to comply with the revised norms without delay, ensuring that safety infrastructure is uniformly implemented across the country.
