New Delhi, April 13: States and Union Territories (UTs) have been alerted about a possible cyber attack from a suspected group from Indonesia allegedly targeting 12,000 government websites across the country, top sources said on Thursday.

Following their findings of the Indonesian cyber attack group hatching a conspiracy to carry out their nefarious goals, the Ministry of Home Affairs' Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) alerted the States and the UTs.

According to the inputs shared with the States and the UTs, there can be an attack on government-run websites whether it is under state governments and the Central government.

Concerned officials have been directed to take the necessary preventive measures in order to thwart the cyber attack which is expected soon.

In November of last year, Chinese hackers launched a ransomware attack on the servers of Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) later stated that five physical servers had been compromised by Chinese hackers.

Although the data on the five servers were successfully recovered, the MoHF stated that the damage could have been significantly worse.

Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar has also stated that the ransomware attack on AIIMS Delhi servers was a conspiracy planned by forces that were pretty significant.

On November 23, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi purportedly faced a cyber attack that rendered its servers inefficient. On November 25, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police registered a case of extortion and cyber terrorism.
