Chandigarh building collapse: Two pulled out of debris dead as rescue operation ends
PTC News Desk: Two people died after a two-storey building collapsed in the Industrial Area Phase-2, Chandigarh on Saturday (July 4, 2026), officials said.
Six people were rescued from the debris after the building collapse and taken to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. Four people were pulled out first, while two others were rescued later and rushed to the same hospital.
GMCH-32 Medical Superintendent Vishal Guglani said three of the injured were being treated at the hospital and were in stable condition.
After the incident, teams from the fire department, police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the site and carried out a rescue operation that lasted for more than five hours.
Authorities also deployed heavy machines to clear the debris and sealed off the area. As a safety measure, the nearby building was evacuated.
NDRF Deputy Commandant Deepak Singh said, "After receiving information that a building had collapsed, our nearest team from Panchkula reached the site without delay. All those trapped under the debris have been rescued. We are now conducting an extensive final search to ensure that no other victims remain trapped. We will share further updates once the operation is complete." Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi, who visited the site to assess the situation, told reporters that it was an old building which was being renovated when it suddenly collapsed.
