Delhi-Chennai Indigo flight diverted to Hyderabad after power bank triggers smoke onboard, lands safely

PTC News Desk: An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after smoke was detected coming from a passenger’s personal electronic device onboard.

Flight 6E 6115 landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad, Hyderabad, after the pilots diverted the aircraft in line with established safety protocols.

According to an IndiGo spokesperson, the cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control before the aircraft landed. The airline did not disclose the type of electronic device involved or the exact cause of the smoke.

Preliminary information suggested that a passenger’s power bank might have caught fire onboard. However, IndiGo did not confirm whether the device was a power bank.

Alternate aircraft arranged

IndiGo said it arranged an alternate aircraft to fly the passengers to Chennai following the diversion. The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused and said it was taking steps to minimise disruption to passengers.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates,” the spokesperson said.

The airline reiterated that the safety of passengers and crew remained its top priority.

The incident forced the flight to divert from its scheduled route, with the pilots choosing to land in Hyderabad in accordance with established safety protocols.

Smoke coming from a passenger’s personal electronic device can require immediate attention onboard an aircraft. In this case, the cabin crew responded promptly, while the pilots diverted the flight and landed safely at Hyderabad airport.

What rules say on carrying such gadgets ?

Under IndiGo’s policy, passengers may carry a maximum of two spare lithium-ion batteries, including power banks, with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh), subject to airport security clearance. A 100 Wh battery is equivalent to approximately 27,000 milliampere-hours (mAh).

The capacity of the power bank involved in the recent incident has not been confirmed. However, most consumer power banks typically have capacities ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 mAh.

Batteries with capacities above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh are also permitted, with a maximum limit of two, but only if they are intended for portable medical devices. Passengers must obtain approval from IndiGo at the check-in counter to carry such batteries.

According to the airline’s policy, power banks must be kept in their original retail packaging or separate plastic bags. Their terminals must be taped and insulated to prevent short circuits.

The policy also prohibits passengers from recharging power banks or using them to charge other devices while onboard an aircraft.

These rules apply to both domestic and international flights.
