Class 6 student dies days after being forced to do 100 sit-ups as punishment; teacher arrested
PTC Web Desk: A woman teacher from a private school in Maharashtra’s Palghar district has been arrested in connection with the death of a Class 6 student who was allegedly made to do 100 sit-ups for arriving late to school, the police said on Thursday.
According to officials from the Waliv police station, the teacher, who has now been removed from the Sativali-based school in Vasai, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The 13-year-old student was reportedly punished on November 8 for coming late. Her mother alleged that the teacher forced her to perform 100 sit-ups while carrying her school bag, calling it an “inhuman punishment.” The child, who had pre-existing health issues, fell seriously ill soon after. She was admitted to a Mumbai hospital, where she succumbed to her condition seven days later.
The girl’s death triggered anger in the community, leading to protests by residents and members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Following the public outcry, the police registered a case and arrested the teacher on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the state education department has begun an inquiry, and the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation has also initiated a separate probe into the incident.
