PTC News Desk: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices were increased by Re 1 per kg in Delhi-NCR on Saturday, marking the second fuel price hike this week as rising global crude oil prices continue to impact oil companies.

After the latest hike, CNG in Delhi now costs Rs 80.09 per kg, while prices in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad have gone up to Rs 88.70 per kg. This comes just two days after CNG rates were increased by Rs 2 per kg on May 15, taking the total hike to Rs 3 per kg within 48 hours.

The earlier increase also saw petrol and diesel prices rise by Rs 3 per litre across the country for the first time in over four years. State-run oil companies said the revision was necessary because of losses caused by rising international crude oil prices amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

In Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 97.77 per litre, up from Rs 94.77, while diesel prices have increased from Rs 87.67 to Rs 90.67 per litre. Fuel prices differ from state to state because of varying VAT rates.

CNG prices were also raised in Mumbai earlier this week, where the fuel now costs Rs 84 per kg. However, there has been no change in the prices of piped natural gas for households or domestic LPG cylinders so far.

Global crude oil prices have jumped by more than 50 per cent since the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 and Iran’s response, which disrupted oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

Even though global oil prices were rising, fuel prices in India had remained unchanged for several weeks as the government tried to protect consumers from the sudden impact. Opposition parties alleged that the Centre delayed the hike because Assembly elections were taking place in important states.

The latest revision came soon after the elections ended, in which the BJP won three of the five states that went to polls, including West Bengal. Petrol and diesel prices are now at their highest levels since May 2022. Fuel rates had mostly remained stable since April 2022, except for a Rs 2 per litre cut in March 2024 before the Lok Sabha Elections.

In Mumbai, petrol now costs Rs 106.68 per litre and diesel Rs 93.14 per litre. In Kolkata, petrol is priced at Rs 108.74 and diesel at Rs 95.13 per litre. In Chennai, petrol now costs Rs 103.67 per litre, while diesel is being sold at Rs 95.25 per litre.
