Commuter chaos: Chandigarh cab, auto drivers extend indefinite hunger strike

Chandigarh cab drivers extend hunger strike: The Cab Auto Union Front has extended their indefinite hunger strike in Sector 25, Chandigarh and tricity over unfulfilled demands of cab and auto drivers. 

Notably, the indefinite hunger strike led by cab and auto drivers of Chandigarh and tricity which started from August 10th and was scheduled to finish on August 15 severely impacted services in tricity leaving locals and tourists stranded.

Meanwhile, president of Cab and Auto Front Union, Inderbhan Singh said that they have been protesting in their demand for safe and smoothly working environment. President further added that, “It’s not just about security, we are also facing financial issues due to unfair commission structures, taxation complexities and high rental costs.”

60% cabs to operate 

Keeping in view the inconvenience caused to passengers, Cab Union president relaxed the hunger strike to some extent by ordering to operate 60 per cent of the cabs starting from tomorrow. Moreover, presidents also give call to drivers to keep their cabs off the road from 10 am to 5 pm. 

Cab, auto drivers on indefinite strike- know why

The indefinite hunger strike has been launched in the wake of tragic murder of cab driver near Mullanpur by unidentified passengers.

The horrific cab driver murder in Mullanpur fueled call for attention and action, leaving several cab aggregators stranded for hours on the day of incident.

Following the tragic murder of the cab driver in Mullanpur, leaders and members of cab and auto unions raised their voice against the cab services platforms such as Ola, Uber, and In-Driver services convened a meeting to voice their concerns against both the local administration and cab service providers. 

Notably, more than 8,000 cabs ply in tricity serving to common people, employees, students, tourists and shoppers, etc.

Representing the tricity region, which includes Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, the cab and auto unions collaborate under the banner of the Cab Auto Union Front to collectively stage this hunger strike.
