New York bans TikTok on government devices over security concerns

NYC bans TikTok:   Joining the list of other cities and states, now New York also imposed restrictions on the most-hyped short video sharing application. 

Citing the security concerns, New York City on Wednesday banned TikTok on government-owned devices.

Notably, several government officials have been restricting access to TikTok in reaction to concerns that the app — owned by the Chinese company ByteDance — could give Beijing access to sensitive user data.

Currently, TikTok which is operated by more than 150 million Americans and is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance- could give Beijing access to sensitive user data.

Security concerns over TikTok have become a nationwide concern thus restricting access to government officials. 

As per the statement by a spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams, Jonah Allon said, “TikTok posed a security threat to the city’s technical networks.”

In order to totally ban TikTok from New York, city agencies must remove the application within 30 days and will lose access to TikTok and its website from city-owned devices and networks.

 Earlier also, New York State has banned TikTok on state-issued mobile devices for more than three years, with some exceptions.

The TikTok accounts of Adams, the city’s Department of Sanitation and the Department of Parks and Recreation all updated their bios with this message: “This account was operated by NYC until August 2023. It’s no longer monitored,” sources reported. 

TikTok as well as Apple and Google, which operate mobile app stores, would face fines if they violate the ban.

While close to half of American adults who support a ban on TikTok will be much happier on the restrictions imposed on the application, other  may grieve the loss of such accounts.
