Congress commends Nehru's enduring legacy in promoting yoga on International Yoga Day; Shashi Tharoor recognises

New Delhi, June 21: On the ninth International Yoga Day, the Congress expressed gratitude to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for his role in popularising yoga, with a tweet showcasing his participation in yoga activities. In response, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor affirmed the contribution of Nehru while also acknowledging the current BJP-led government's efforts.

Shashi Tharoor responded to the tweet, stating, "Indeed! We should also acknowledge all those who revived & popularised Yoga, including the government." He further emphasised the significance of yoga as part of India's soft power on the global stage and expressed his satisfaction in seeing it recognised.

Previously, Tharoor had cautioned the Congress not to become complacent following their success in the Karnataka assembly elections. He urged the party not to assume that their victory in one state automatically guarantees success in the upcoming general elections.

The theme for this year's International Yoga Day is "Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," emphasizing the concept of the world as one family.

Various dignitaries participated in yoga sessions across the country. President Droupadi Murmu performed yoga at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined a yoga event on board INS Vikrant. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a state visit to the United States, conducted a yoga session at the lawns of the UN Headquarters in New York. The event witnessed the participation of top UN officials and envoys from around the world.

In his video message for Yoga Day, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India's tradition of embracing new ideas and celebrated the country's diverse heritage. He also expressed his appreciation for the historic and unprecedented participation of over 180 countries in response to India's call for International Yoga Day.
