Dabur India, Subsidiaries face lawsuits over hair relaxer products in US and Canada

PTC Web Desk: Dabur India on Wednesday stated that that its subsidiaries, along with other companies, were facing lawsuits in the United States and Canada. These lawsuits were brought by customers who allege that the use of hair relaxer products has led to health issues, including ovarian and uterine cancer, as reported by Reuters.

In an exchange filing, Dabur India stated that the cases are currently in the early stages of litigation, during the pleadings and early discovery phases. The company emphasised that these allegations are based on incomplete and unsubstantiated studies.

Approximately 5,400 cases against various companies, including Dabur India's subsidiaries like Namaste Laboratories, Dermoviva Skin Essentials, and Dabur International, have been consolidated into a multi-district litigation before a US District Court in Illinois. Dabur's subsidiaries have denied any liability and have retained legal representation to defend their interests.

Dabur India, known for its Vatika Shampoo and Honitus cough syrup brands, acknowledged that it cannot currently determine the financial implications regarding settlements or verdict outcomes. However, it anticipates that the defense costs may surpass the materiality threshold in the near future. The company did not respond to requests for additional information.
