Delhi shivers on New Year morning; heavy rain lashes parts of Punjab, Chandigarh
PTC News Desk: Delhi began the New Year under chilly conditions on Thursday, with air quality still in the “very poor” range. Localities like Anand Vihar, Mundka and Jahangirpuri reported AQI readings above 400, falling in the “severe” category. Overall, the city’s AQI was recorded at 371 at 8:05 am, as per data from the CPCB’s Sameer app, reflecting very poor air quality.
Punjab and Chandigarh welcomed the New Year with rainfall, as heavy showers were recorded in several areas in the morning. However, cold wave conditions and dense fog continue to prevail.
The Meteorological Department had already issued an orange alert for dense fog, light rain and cold wave conditions. Meanwhile, a slight increase has been recorded in both minimum and maximum temperatures, with temperatures rising by 0.2 degrees Celsius. Gurdaspur remained the coldest place, recording a temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius.
Visibility dropped to zero in Amritsar and Chandigarh, while it was recorded at 10 metres in Ludhiana and 20 metres in Patiala. In Halwara, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Bathinda and Ballowal Saunkri, visibility was below 50 metres. Due to poor visibility, air and rail services have been affected
