BJP office grenade explosion: A low intensity explosion was reported outside BJP office in Chandigarh Sector 37 triggering panic in the area and: leading to a massive security response.
Meanwhile, banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a message released in Punjabi, one Sukhjinder Singh Babbar said violence against Punjab’s youth would be met with retaliation. The blast is claimed to be in retaliation of the encounter of Ranjit Singh in Gurdaspur.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur said prima facie, it appeared a small crude-type device was thrown towards the building.
According to the eyewitnesses, the device was intended to be hurled inside the premises , however it was misdirected and wind down on a stack of sand nearby. Vehicles parked nearby sustained massive damage in the explosion.
Soon after the incident, multiple teams from the Chandigarh Police rushed to the spot. Units from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), bomb disposal squad, dog squad, and forensic experts have been deployed to examine the site thoroughly. Officials confirmed that fragments of the explosive device have been collected for detailed analysis.
Teams from the Indian Army and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) also visited the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
CCTV footage from the area has revealed the presence of two suspects who were seen moving around the BJP office on a motorcycle before and after the blast. A manhunt has been launched to trace the suspects. Meanwhile, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police has also joined the probe.
