Delhi witnesses showers; IMD forecasts more rain and thunderstorms today

PTC Web Desk: Parts of Delhi experienced light rain on Saturday morning, bringing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, throughout the day across the national capital region (NCR).

As per IMD data, Delhi received 0.8 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Friday to 8.30 am on Saturday. Saturday started off on a pleasant note, with the minimum temperature recorded at 22.2°C, which is 2.5 degrees below the seasonal average. The relative humidity stood at 82% at 8.30 am, indicating a humid start to the weekend.


The maximum temperature for the day is expected to be around 34°C, as thunderstorms continue to provide a cooling effect. On Friday, Delhi witnessed one of the wettest days in May in recent years, with the Safdarjung Observatory recording 77 mm of rain in just six hours—between 2.30 am and 8.30 am. This makes it the second-highest 24-hour May rainfall since 1901. Despite the rain, Delhi's air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 152 at 9 am, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The CPCB classifies AQI levels between 101 and 200 as ‘moderate’, which may cause discomfort to sensitive individuals.
