Farmers' protest: Farmers declare 'ceasefire' for now, say 'will try again tomorrow'
Farmers' protest: After hours of clashes with police on their way to Delhi today, protesting farmers declared a "ceasefire" and vowed to "try again tomorrow".
On the first day of the farmers' protest, Haryana police went all out to prevent protesters from entering the state, using drones carrying tear gas canisters, water cannons, cement barriers, sandbags and tyre deflators.
The farmers say they're prepared for a long haul and have six months' worth of rations and diesel.
"We didn't budge through the 13 months last time. We were promised our demands would be met, but the government didn't keep its promise. This time, we will leave only after all our demands are met," a farmer stated.
According to the protesting farmers, the centre promised them better crop prices, after which they ended the 2021 protest. Protesting farmers are demanding to enact a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for all crops, as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission report.
They also want a complete debt waiver and a scheme to provide pensions to farmers and farm workers.
Farmers have also urged the repeal of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 and the reintroduction of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, which requires farmer consent and compensation equal to four times the collector rate.
They also demand that those responsible for the Lakhimpur Kheri killings be punished.
