Greater Noida: First-year BTech student found dead in hostel, note mentions academic pressure

PTC Web Desk: A 19-year-old engineering student was found dead inside his hostel room in Greater Noida on Tuesday, in what the police believe to be a case of suicide triggered by academic stress. The student, Akash Deep, was in his first year of the BTech (Computer Science) programme at Delhi Technical Campus. Originally from Bihar, he was residing in a privately-run hostel located in the Knowledge Park area.

According to police officials, the incident occurred in the evening hours when Akash was alone in his room. His roommate had gone out and returned later to find the door locked from inside. After gaining entry, the student was discovered hanging. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.

During the investigation,  the police recovered a note from the room in which Akash spoke about his inability to cope with academic expectations and the guilt he felt over his parents’ financial investment in his education. In the message, he apologised to his parents and clearly stated that his decision was personal, requesting that no one be held accountable.

The note also mentioned his previous academic difficulties, including unsatisfactory performance during Classes 11 and 12 and a year-long break taken earlier. He reportedly expressed fear of repeating past failures and wrote that he did not wish to continue a four-year course he believed he was unprepared for, nor did he want to place further financial strain on his family.

Senior police officer Arvind Kumar Chahal said initial findings point towards pressure related to studies. “The deceased was a first-year engineering student at Delhi Technical Campus. A note has been found indicating stress due to academics. We are following all legal procedures,” he said.

The student’s family has been informed, and the police said further inquiry is underway.
