Gyanvapi case: Judge alleges receiving death threats from international numbers, says report

PTC News Desk: Additional Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has reportedly informed the Uttar Pradesh police about receiving "malicious calls and death threats from international numbers." Judge Diwakar gained prominence for his directive to conduct a videography survey of Varanasi's Gyanvapi complex in 2022 and has now sought an investigation into these threats.

In a letter addressed to SSP Sushil Chandrabhan Ghule this week, Diwakar expressed deep concern over the threatening calls originating from international numbers, as reported by TOI.

Previously, following similar concerns raised by the judge post the Gyanvapi verdict, the had granted Y-category security to him and his family, albeit later downgraded to X-category.
Presently, Diwakar's security comprises two personnel. However, one of his aides highlighted the inadequacy of this security arrangement, noting the absence of weapons for countering armed terrorists, as reported by Times Of India.

In 2022, Diwakar had remarked on the atmosphere of fear surrounding the case, emphasising the constant worry for his and his family's safety. Last year, a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI) was arrested near Diwakar's Lucknow residence, prompting the assignment of a gunner for guarding the house of Justice Diwakar's brother, who also serves as an additional district judge, by Shahjahanpur SSP Ashok Kumar Meena. However, this security detail was later withdrawn due to ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Recently transferred to Bareilly, Justice Diwakar took suo motu action on the 2018 Bareilly riots case, summoning senior cleric Tauqeer Raza to stand trial as the alleged mastermind.
