Haryana farmers' protest: Protesters spend night on NH-44 in Kurukshetra
Haryana farmers' protest: Farmers who have been protesting against the Haryana government over MSP for sunflower seed slept overnight at the protest site on Monday night. Protesting farmers blocked national highway-44 in Pipli in Haryana's Kurukshetra district on Monday.
As the blockade of the route connecting Delhi with Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Jammu continued, police diverted traffic. Meanwhile, farmers will gather on Tuesday to discuss their next steps after two rounds of talks with the district administration failed to yield any results.
Several farmer unions have already stated that they are prepared to go the distance and would continue to block the NH-44 until their demands are met.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said they met with the district administration twice on Monday night but there was no outcome.
He stated that a local committee of farmers, formed on Monday, and the leaders of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) would meet on Tuesday to plan their next steps.
Tikait stated that the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sunflower crops affects not only farmers in Haryana but the entire farmer community, "as we are demanding an MSP law for all crops, as promised by the union government when we withdrew the 'Kisan andolan' (farmers agitation against now repealed farm laws)". Aside from the MSP for sunflower seeds, the protesting farmers want the release of nine farmer union leaders who were arrested during a recent protest in Shahabad.
