Haryana seeks CBI probe into former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa's son's death

PTC News Desk: The Haryana government has written to Central government urging Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa’s son Aqil Akhtar on October 16.

A first information report (FIR) was registered in Panchkula on October 20 against Mustafa, a retired 1985-batch IPS officer, Sultana, their daughter and daughter-in-law under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

According to the officials, in view of the sensitivity of the case and gravity of the allegations levelled against ex-DGP and the fact that the case falls under multiple state jurisdictions, the state government decided that the investigations in the case be handed over to the CBI.

“A reference under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act granting the consent of the Haryana government for extending the power and jurisdiction of the CBI to Haryana for the investigation of the case has been made to the department of personnel and training of the central government. Once the central government orders accordingly, the CBI will take over the case for investigation,’’ said an official familiar with the matter.

Mustafa has stated that he and his family are fully prepared to cooperate with the investigation. He and his relatives are currently in their hometown of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where Aqil’s last rites were conducted. The family plans to travel to Malerkotla for a prayer service on October 25 and return to Panchkula on October 26.

On the night of October 16, 35-year-old Aqil was found unconscious at his home in Sector 4 of the Mansa Devi Complex, Panchkula. His family rushed him to the civil hospital, but since there were no immediate signs of foul play, the body was released to the family after the post-mortem the next day.
