Health centre gives wrong dose to infant in Kochi, hospitalised

Kochi (Kerala), April 16: A family health centre allegedly administered a sixth-week dose of vaccine to an eight-day-old newborn by mistake, after which the newborn was hospitalised in Edapally in Kerala's Kochi.

According to the infant's family, the infant was administered the vaccine for the sixth week instead of the first week. The family also wrote to Kerala Health Minister Veena George and the secretary of the health department following the incident, seeking action against the health centre authorities.

Rajesh, kin of the child, said that after the 8th day of her birth, the infant was administered a sixth-week dose instead of the first-week dose.

"My niece's daughter, who is only eight days old, had to go through such a horrible experience," he added. "After receiving the wrong dose, the child fell sick."

On April 12, the alleged incident was reported at the Family Health Centre in Edapally, Kochi.

The health centre's officials refused to comment on the situation.

The infant was allegedly admitted to the intensive care unit of Ernakulam General Hospital.

"The health centre did not have the facility to incubate the child, and she was shifted to the private hospital where she was born," they added.

"We are concerned that the child might develop some health issues in the future," the family added.
