Heavy rain, waterlogging in Delhi: Houses collapse, schools to remain shut

PTC News Desk: Heavy rainfall triggered severe waterlogging and structural collapses in Delhi, causing major problems and prompting serious safety concerns. The city witnessed significant waterlogging in various areas.

Streets in South Delhi's Chhatarpur area became waters, with slippers floating in the water as vehicles navigated the floods. Waterlogging caused chaos in the Pragati Maidan tunnel, while major intersections such as ITO, Dhaula Kuan, and airport roads were clogged with traffic.

Following heavy rain in Delhi on Wednesday evening, several buildings collapsed, and one person was reported trapped in Chandni Chowk's Sadar Bazar. At least ten aircraft bound for Delhi, including one from Tokyo, were diverted, while vehicles were trapped on flooded roads in several locations.

The Delhi government has stated that all schools will be closed on Thursday.

"In light of very heavy rainfall today evening and forecast of heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools - government and private - will remain closed tomorrow," Education Minister Atishi stated.

A 22-year-old woman Tanuja and her 3-year-old child drowned in a waterlogged drain in Ghazipur. Tanuja and her three-year-old son Priyansh were out shopping for household things at a weekly market when they fell into a drain owing to waterlogging and drowned, according to Ghazipur police. The event occurred near the Khoda Colony neighbourhood, where a roadside drain was being constructed.
