Heavy snowfall grips Himachal Pradesh; roads closed, schools shut as avalanche warning issued
PTC News Desk: Authorities in Himachal Pradesh have issued avalanche warning for Lahaul and Spiti while urging the residents and tourists to excise utmost caution as heavy snowfall coupled with rain continues to lash in several parts of the region.
With state recording widespread snowfall and rainfall over the last 24 hours, as many as 200 roads have been closed and schools have been shut as avalanche warning looms large. Several areas in districts of Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur and Chamba have been cut off from the rest of the state.
In most other parts of the state, there’s an orange alert for light to moderate rainfall over the next few hours. Traffic has been diverted from Sainj to Shimla via Luhri/Sunni, officials added. A total of 12 roads are closed in Shimla district.
According to a statement from Lahaul and Spiti Police, the advisory — based on assessments from the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) and the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) — warns of potential medium-sized avalanches on steep slopes. Travellers have been strongly advised to stick to designated safe routes to minimise risks.
“The snow avalanche warning (Danger Level 3, Orange) will remain in effect for Lahaul and Spiti until 5:00 PM on February 28, 2025,” the advisory reads. It highlights vulnerable areas prone to avalanches and urges people to limit movement to secure paths.
