Himachal Pradesh: Cloudburst in Kullu; one dead and 3 injured
Kullu, July 17: In the early hours of Monday morning, a cloudburst struck the region of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, resulting in devastating consequences. The heavy downpour caused landslides, flash floods, and extensive damage to roads and infrastructure throughout the area.
The incident occurred near Kayas village in Raison, Kullu district, claiming the life of one individual and leaving three others injured. The unfortunate event transpired at approximately 3:55 am, following the relentless rainfall that had been transpiring in Himachal Pradesh.
The deceased individual has been identified as Badal Sharma from Chansari village, while the injured individuals were washed away in a vehicle during the cloudburst. The local authorities at Kullu District Education Officer's Cell (DEOC) were promptly informed about the incident near Kayas village in Raison.
Rescue teams and the police swiftly mobilized to the scene to provide assistance and support. However, reaching the affected area was hindered by a blocked road. To address this obstacle, a JCB (earth-moving machinery) was deployed to clear the passage.
On the preceding day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in four states, including Himachal Pradesh. In a tweet, the IMD warned that both Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand should anticipate heavy to very heavy showers from July 16 to 17.
The torrential downpours in Himachal Pradesh have wreaked havoc, triggering landslides, flash floods, and extensive damage to roads and infrastructure across the region. According to the state emergency response center, the losses incurred since the monsoon's onset on June 24 have amounted to approximately Rs 4,357 crore. Additionally, the inclement weather conditions have led to the unfortunate loss of 111 lives due to rain-related incidents and road accidents in the state.
