PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway, a crucial 8-lane highway spanning 19 km. This segment, constructed at a cost of Rs 4,100 crore, aims to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion between Delhi and Gurugram on National Highway (NH)-48.
Purpose and Significance
The Dwarka Expressway, with an overall construction cost of Rs 9,000 crore, serves as a pivotal infrastructural project divided into four segments. This ambitious venture is designed to significantly improve traffic flow, provide seamless connectivity, and address the growing congestion issues along the Delhi-Gurugram corridor.
The Haryana Section
The newly inaugurated Haryana section comprises a 10.2 km stretch from the Delhi-Haryana Border to Basai Rail-over-Bridge (ROB) and an 8.7 km section from Basai ROB to Kherki Daula. Connecting directly between the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and the Gurugram Bypass, this segment is expected to enhance the overall commuting experience for travellers.

The Dwarka Expressway is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, entirely access-controlled, grade-separated 14-lane expressway. This pioneering initiative boasts four multi-level interchanges, including tunnels or underpasses, an elevated flyover, and an additional flyover above the initial structure.
Tunnel Construction
A notable feature of the expressway is India's first 4 km long 8-lane tunnel near the IGI airport. This 'shallow tunnel' design, avoiding the need for tunnel boring machines, became necessary due to limitations in erecting an elevated structure close to the airport.
Construction Progress and Timeline
Construction on the Dwarka Expressway commenced in 2018, with an initial completion target set for 2021. However, project timelines experienced extensions, primarily due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now announced that the entire project is expected to conclude by August this year.
