IMD issues red alert in Delhi over dense fog, air quality turns severe; IGI Airport issues advisory
PTC News Desk: Dense fog engulfed national capital on Monday causing visibility to drop significantly, resulting in disruption in flight operations and train cancellations, plunging air quality into severe category.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for dense fog on Tuesday morning.
The visibility at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and Safdarjung was 50 metres at 8 am. It improved to 100 metres around 9 am, the weather office said.
Currently the airport is functioning under Category-III conditions, which allows flights to land in low visibility.

“Due to dense fog, flight operations are currently under CAT III conditions, resulting in flight disruptions. Please be assured, our on-ground officials are working closely with all stakeholders to assist passengers and provide necessary support across Terminals. For the latest flight updates, please contact your respective airlines. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused, ” the advisory read.
Railway operations were also disrupted due to foggy conditions, delaying several trains from their scheduled time.
The city's air quality is likely to be in the 'very poor' category on Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning to the 'severe' category on New Year's Day, the Air Quality Early Warning System said.
