IMD warns of intense rainfall in four Tamil Nadu districts

Chennai, December 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall expected in four districts of Tamil Nadu. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts are likely to experience heavy rains within the next 24 hours. Additionally, moderate rain accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning is anticipated in many areas across these districts.

Recent IMD data reveals that Chennai Nungambakkam has recorded 5.88 cm of rainfall, while Chennai Meenambakkam has seen 7.12 cm of rainfall within the last 24 hours. The intensified rainfall is a result of a well-defined low-pressure area that has transformed into a depression over the southeast region, adjacent to the Southwest Bay of Bengal.

The IMD has forecasted the development of a cyclonic storm expected to traverse the South Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coastlines between Chennai and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh by the evening of December 4. In Tiruvallur district, heavy rainfall persists, particularly in coastal areas like Palaverkadu, Ponneri, Gummidipoondi, Periyapalayam, Sholavaram, and other regions since Saturday morning. The ongoing inclement weather prompted Tiruvallur Collector Prabhushankar to visit an NDRF camp, briefing personnel about the imminent Cyclone Michaung and the state's readiness to tackle it.

The continuous heavy rainfall, coupled with the anticipation of an approaching cyclonic disturbance, has raised concerns about potential flooding and other weather-related issues in these districts, prompting authorities to take proactive measures to mitigate any potential risks.
