India to fence 1,643 km border with Myanmar border for better surveillance: Home Minister Shah
PTC News Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Tuesday that the Centre has decided to build a fence along the entire 1,643-kilometer Indo-Myanmar border for better surveillance and maintain a patrol track.
Amit Shah, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to strengthening national borders, announced that the government has decided to build a fence along the entire India-Myanmar border.
"The Modi government is committed to building impenetrable borders. It has decided to construct a fence along the entire 1643-kilometer-long Indo-Myanmar border. To facilitate better surveillance, a patrol track along the border will also be paved," the Home Minister said.
The Minister stated that a 10-kilometre stretch of the border in Moreh, Manipur, has already been fenced.
Furthermore, the Minister stated that two pilot fencing projects using a Hybrid Surveillance System (HSS) are currently underway in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, each involving a 1-kilometer stretch of fencing.
"Additionally, fence works covering approximately 20 km in Manipur have also been approved, and the work will start soon," Shah went on to say.

Officials familiar with the situation have previously stated that the Central government is considering terminating the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar in order to reduce the influx of illegal migrants and insurgents.
The plan is being considered to put an end to a point of contention as local residents complain that the FMR policy is frequently abused and facilitates "illegal immigration, drug and arms trafficking". The Manipur government, as well as other northeastern states affected by the problem, had previously raised the issue with the Central government.
The 1,643-kilometer-long India-Myanmar border, which runs through Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, is currently under the FMR, which allows people living near the border to travel 16 kilometres into each other's territories without a visa. The FMR policy, launched in 2018, was part of India's Act East policy.
