Israel airspace closure forces Air India to divert Delhi-Tel Aviv flight amid Iran-Israel tensions

PTC Web Desk: Amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, Israel has closed its airspace, prompting Air India to divert its Delhi-Tel Aviv flight to Mumbai on Saturday.

Air India stated that flight AI139, scheduled from Delhi to Tel Aviv on February 28, was returning to India and diverted to Mumbai “in the interest of passengers and crew safety” due to the airspace closure.

Following the attacks, both Air India and IndiGo have temporarily suspended their Middle East operations. Air India also provided contact numbers 91 1169329333 and 91 1169329999 for passengers seeking further information.

The airspace closure came after Israel launched strikes on multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, early Saturday morning (IST), with explosions heard and air raid sirens activated. In retaliation, Iran fired approximately 400 missiles at Israel, escalating regional tensions.

Air India confirmed that it continues to monitor the security environment closely and will adjust operations as required. According to Flightradar24.com, AI139, operated with a Boeing 777, remained in the air for over five hours before returning after entering Saudi Arabian airspace. The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the sudden operational changes. IndiGo stated it is closely tracking regional updates regarding Iran and its airspace.

Advisory for Indian citizens

Following the announcement of US combat operations against Iran, the Indian government advised its citizens in Iran and Israel to exercise extreme caution and remain alert. The Indian Embassy in Iran recommended avoiding non-essential movement and staying indoors.

Official data indicates that over 10,000 Indians, including students, are residing in Iran, while more than 41,000 Indians live in Israel. The advisory instructed citizens to remain near designated shelters and be aware of the closest safe locations in their residential or work areas.
