Jaya Shetty killing: A Mumbai court convicted gangster Chhota Rajan on Thursday for the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001. The court will most likely rule on the sentence later in the day.

AM Patil, the special judge for proceedings under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), convicted Rajan.

Who was Jaya Shetty?

Jaya Shetty owned the Golden Crown Hotel in Gamdevi, central Mumbai. He was receiving extortion calls from the Chhota Rajan gang. In May 2001, he was shot dead by two alleged members of the gang inside his hotel.

Due to the threats, the Maharashtra police provided him with security cover. However, two months prior to the murder, his security clearance was taken away.
