Karnataka: Israeli tourist, homestay operator sexually assaulted, Co-traveler thrown into canal found dead
PTC News Desk: In a shocking incident, two women—a 27-year-old female Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old female operator of a homestay were sexually assaulted by three men on the banks of the popular Sanapur Lake, near Hampi in Karnataka, on Thursday night.
The incident unfolded at around 11:30 pm when the women were stargazing at the site. The accused pushed the three travelers into the canal before targeting the women. While Daniel, who is from the United States, and Pankaj, a traveler from Maharashtra, managed to swim to the shore, Bibash from Odisha drowned. His body was found Saturday morning. Meanwhile the women are undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
The police have initated investigation into the matter and launched manhunt to nab the accused.
"Five people - two women and three men - were attacked near Sanapur. Two of them are foreigners - an American, and another a woman from Israel. The woman said in her complaint that besides being beaten up, the two women were sexually assaulted by the accused," said Ram L Arasiddi, Superintendent of Police, Koppal.
According to her complaint, the 29-year-old homestay owner stated that after dinner, she and four guests went stargazing along the banks of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal when the accused arrived on a motorcycle.
Initially, they inquired about where to find petrol but soon began demanding ₹100 from the group. When their demand was refused, they assaulted the travelers, pushed the men into the canal, and sexually assaulted the women. After committing the crime, they escaped on their motorcycle.
