Kolkata doctor murder: Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has been at the centre of a major controversy since the body of a trainee doctor was found on the campus of the institution he led.

CBI, which is investigating the issue, has filed a case of financial irregularities at the medical college during Ghosh's tenure. Following directives from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation from a state-constituted SIT. The order was issued in response to a plea filed by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, requesting that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigate alleged financial irregularities at the institution.

Ghosh resigned as principal of RG Kar Medical College just two days after the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor's body was found in a seminar hall on August 9. However, he was swiftly as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, a West Bengal government decision that sparked student protests and harsh questioning from the Calcutta High Court.

The court ordered him to go on "long leave" and questioned his reappointment within 12 hours. "How did he step down and then be rewarded with another responsibility?"

On August 20, the Kolkata Police started a corruption complaint against Ghosh after the West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, constituted a SIT to investigate claims of financial misconduct at the state-run hospital dating back to 2021.

The SIT handed over all of the essential documents to the CBI today, which re-registered the First Information Report.
