Kuwait fire: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of Indian nationals who lost their lives in a massive fire in Kuwait, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

A fire engulfed a multi-story building housing foreign workers in southern Kuwait's Mangaf area early Wednesday, killing at least 49 people, largely Indians, and injuring more than 50 others, officials said.

Prime Minister Modi chaired a review discussion on the Kuwait fire tragedy at his residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, according to a statement from the MEA.

Expressing deep grief over the tragic occurrence, he sent condolences to the families of those deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery.

The Prime Minister directed that the Indian government give any possible assistance. The Minister of State for External Affairs "should immediately travel to Kuwait to oversee the relief measures and facilitate the expeditious repatriation of the remains," the statement stated.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, Pramod Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, and other senior officials were all present at the meeting.

The Indian embassy earlier in the day stated that it is in contact with Kuwaiti law enforcement officials, the fire service, and the health department to take appropriate measures.
